In order to register a trademark is it necessary to have a VAT number?
It used to be necessary but not anymore. Following the amendment introduced in the rules and regulations of the Trademarks in 1992, re-confirmed also by the new Industrial Property Code, a private individual could also register a trademark, for later use in its own firm or licence it to a company.
It is quite a profitable business, and after 1992 many private people registered curious names for then selling them to the highest bidder. The only thing to bear in mind is that the trademark must be used within 5 years from his registration, otherwise it lapses and all the rights are lost.
